The Alfa Romeo 4C is a carbon fiber supercar you could almost afford
Bored and scrolling on the toilet? Here's one worth the extra five minutes. The Alfa Romeo 4C has a tub made entirely of carbon fiber, the same idea the priciest supercars are built around, and when it came to America for 2015 it started at $53,900. Alfa called it "the attainable supercar." For once the marketing department wasn't kidding.
Alfa's comeback car
The 4C led Alfa Romeo's return to North America. The first 500 cars were a serialized Launch Edition at $68,400. The regular coupe started at $53,900 plus $1,295 destination, sold through an opening group of 86 dealers. Alfa says the design takes its inspiration from the 1967 33 Stradale, and the car was built at the Maserati plant in Modena, Italy.
Why it's called "4C"
The name goes back to Alfa's 8C and 6C cars of the 1930s and '40s, where the number counted the cylinders. So yes, this one has four. It's a 1750 turbo with direct injection and an all-aluminum block, making 237 hp and 258 lb-ft. Alfa says about 80% of that torque shows up by 1,700 rpm. A twin-clutch Alfa TCT gearbox shifts with paddles, and the Alfa DNA switch changes how the car behaves.
Light like a race car
Weight is the whole trick. Besides the carbon fiber monocoque, the 4C uses aluminum structures front and rear, body panels made of a composite Alfa says is 20% lighter than steel, and glass about 10% thinner than usual. Alfa quoted a dry weight of 2,315 lb. It's 157.5 inches long and only 46.6 inches tall, which is under four feet. The lifted pickup next to you at the light will need a periscope.
The Alfa Romeo 4C by the numbers
- Engine: 1.75-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 237 hp and 258 lb-ft
- Layout: mid-engine, rear-wheel drive
- 0–62 mph: 4.5 seconds (Alfa UK); Alfa's US launch release said 0–60 in the "mid-4-second range"
- Top speed: 160 mph
- Dry weight: 2,315 lb; height 46.6 in
- US starting price: $53,900 plus $1,295 destination (Launch Edition $68,400)
Why the 4C turns heads
Darin's photo above is a 4C he found parked on the lot on one of his Lamborghini Miami trips, wrapped nose to tail in a blue-and-white wave art design. Look past the paint and you'll see the shape Alfa was after: round headlights tucked into the fenders, the little Alfa shield up front, a windshield that sits low enough to rest your elbow on. It looks like a toy until you remember the tub is carbon fiber.
Day dreaming in winter
It's light, low and rear-wheel drive, so no "Winter-ready" tag on this card. If yours is tucked under a cover until spring, smart move. Our fleet is still out driving, and you can pick your dates.
Where to see an Alfa Romeo 4C
Snowcap Motors in Evergreen, Colorado lists a black 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C with 37,809 miles at $44,995 (their listed price, checked Oct 25, 2026; tax, title and registration extra). Tap the photo or the button to see it. Darin's photo is a different 4C. For scale: that asking price is less than the car cost new, for a car with a carbon fiber tub. Try telling that to the guy fixing your old Ford.
The honest part
Service, insurance and tire costs are pending until we find numbers from a source we trust. Our own difficulty rating is pending too. We'd rather leave a bar empty than guess.
